Smells from the Chinatown bus

The first bus wasn’t bad, but the smell on this one resembles urinal cake.  At least there’s functioning AC in here.  Also, the rattling of the overhead storage rack makes me think it’s going to fall at any moment.  But the (one way) trip is only $20!

We ventured to an Irish bar in D.C. chinatown.

The bus ride got too bumpy to type so this is the end.

Back Early For Once

I’m on my way back to NYC via Metro North, and on a Saturday!  It’ll be nice to have an extra day to settle back in after a break.  Is it strange that I need rest after my breaks?  After all, it’s only 2 hours away.  Some unfortunate people make that sort of commute EVERY DAY.  That’s 4 hours of travel,  8 hours of work.  I’m not sure if that’s dedication of just doing things the hard way.

Some things I did in CT:  build a desk.  Well, I (actually my Dad) cut a piece of wood 2x, and put it on sawhorses.  Learned some knots, I think 3 of them.  Ate.  A lot.  I learned to make better pie crust, I needed to add more shortening.  Brought Mia to the vet.  Gave Mia a bath.  Learned the beginning of “Big Love” on acoustic.  I finally got the picking pattern down!   Made some performance improvements on Prefix, and fixed a bunch of image crap.  Took a break from NYRB work.  Drove back and forth to NYC to pick up Cindy and Mia.  Not bad for a week.

I left Mia w/ the parents for 3 weeks also to save 2 round trips with the car.  Makes sense, but it’ll be sad to not have her to greet me when I get home after work, or to play with during TV commercials =)  Or to go for runs (we all know I go for so many runs w/ her).  Nice in theory, hard in practice.  She likes i there anyway…  On Metro North right now, which seems to be making every single stop on the route.  The train is packed so I thank god we get on at the first stop (New Haven).  I like to smugly stare a the people standing by the door that couldn’t find a seat, or didn’t feel like looking.  Is that messed up?

I got the Cicada remix of the Editors’ “Munich” playing from some random progressive trance mix I downloaded from 2006.  It’s better than the original I think, the beats and bass add some nice depth to the track.  So I’m just trying to burn another hour while we’re on the train.  Just passed the oddly named “Cos Cob” station.  So many towns that I’ve never been to.  Kind of a shame, but I just never thought of it while I lived here.   I supposed I can always do it later.  What I should be doing right now is reading that Obama book.  Just haven’t dove into it yet.  Or I could be reading the latest issue of The New York Review of Books.  I guess my brain is out of shape.

So (possible) plans for when I get back:  exercise, patch jeans, steel wool desk, buy teak oil, dj hero (likely), read, clean room/apt, tie knots.  Make a Christmas shopping list, a workout schedule.

Stuff

In no particular order:

Reading – I have a lot of books on my shelf that I haven’t read yet.

Drawing – You know, even just sketchbook stuff.

Watercolor – My father got me 2 books on watercolor, and pen/ink with watercolor.

Illustrator – I have that CS2 book collecting dust.

Cooking – My kitchen is large enough to cook something decent.

Skating – Doesn’t have to be fancy, maybe just on the flat in the park next to me.

Snowboarding – Only in the winter of course.

Guitar – Learn some new songs.

Korean – I’m a crappy Korean.

Screen Printing – I have the materials already.

Harmonica – Ideally play guitar at the same time

Check out da Joker

I just got introduced to Joker recently.  It’s dubstep/grime?   Bass beats w/ some electronic flangy stuff.  I heard Kode9 & Space Ape and liked it, but this sounds a bit different.  More melodic I guess they say?   Not sure how people dance to it, but I feel like it’s good for chillin, doing work, working out, etc…

Check it:

Oh on a side note, some asshole in a van cut me off today while I was biking home on sixth ave (far over on the left lane I might add).  Then he had the nerve to yell “they have plenty of bike lanes all over the city.”  Jerk.  Am I mistaken, but bikes are allowed on the street right?  So then I passed him on the right as he got stuck behind traffic.  Sucka!

Barcelona Bound!

I’m leaving the country for the first time in about 10 years… vacation time!!  I’ll be in Barcelona for a week.  I’ll do my best to put up some blog posts, but I promise nothing.

New Neighborhood, LES or Chinatown?

I think technically I live in the Lower East Side.  But if I look out my window, more than half the signs are in Chinese. I guess it’s right where Chinatowna and LES overlap.  I haven’t explored too much, but some of the highlights include:

$1 for 4 dumplings that are decent.  The downside is that the garbage outside ALWAYS smells like chives.

$4 banh mi sandwiches.  You know the ones on a baguette w/ pate and some other yummy meat and fresh veggies?  Usually cilantro too.   So I originally found a place on Orchard that was trying to scam people for $7 or $8 a piece, but I later learned that there’s a place right down the street with the exact same sandwiches for $3.95!  It pays to search around.

Bars in walking distance now = less cab rides.

Guitar Lessons

I just bought a slide and I’m messing w/ open D blues slide guitar. FUN! I sound like garbage but it’s still fun. Lessons force you to play with new stuff.

Next I have to figure out how to record multiple tracks on Garage Band…
